I would like to intall Windows XP on my Dell Dimension
XPS-T600 computer that already has Windows 98 Second
Edition on it. Here are the specs: It has a Pentium III
processor, 128.0MB Ram, File system 32-bit, Virtual
memory 32-bit, C-Drive 26.5 GB

It also has many programs loaded on it, but I can reload
them if the installation of the new operating system
would cause their deletion.

How do I proceed? How do you put an updated operating
system on a computer that already has an operating system
on it?

Thanks.

Dave

You go to the XP web page and download the Upgrade Advisor and run it to see
if you have any compatibility issues.

If there are none you buy the XP Upgrade and install it. It will upgrade SE
to XP - no big deal; assuming Dell has not installed any proprietary
software.

The Upgrade Advisor is a tool you can download and install
to check if your system hardware and software are ready for
upgrading to Windows XP.

Dave, I just upgraded fm Millenium to XP Home. The other
posters are right in getting the MS upgrade download
which will tell you all the actual and possible
compatability issues. I bought the XP Home Upgrade disc.
Make sure you buy the Upgrade disc if U really will
upgrade fm UR old system. You can also go the other way
and completley get rid of 98 and install total XP. If U
do upgrade with the upgrade disc, it will print out a
full listing of the things U need to do before actually
doing the upgrade. You will need to purchase new SW (
Norton 2004 if U have 2001; some digital camera stuff
needs upgraded SW, etc) others U just need to download
the new compatible SW. Anyway, just follow the directions
on the downloaded version or on the XP upgrade disc.

Good Luck. !!!!

....you need to buy some more RAM. Don't even think of
installing WinXP with only 128MB of RAM! Your system
board has 3 sockets and uses PC100 RAM. The max for each
socket is 256MB, so the most you can run is 768MB
http://crucial.com or http://4allmemory.com

I have a Dell Dimension XPS-T600r, by the way, and it
runs WinXP-Pro quite nicely. Of course, I maxed out the
system board with 768 MB of RAM. I'm still using the 32MB
video card that I bought with the system, and it performs
nicely (I'm not into bleeding-edge gaming, so...). I've
added a 48x CD-RW drive, an 80GB hard drive (I dual-boot
with Red Hat Fedora Linux), an ethernet card, and a few
other things, and it's a solid machine.
