installing windows xp professional

I have windows home sp2 and want to install windows xp porfessional older
version. it says cant continue version is older then one on system and that I
will lose files and settings can this be done or will it create problems for
me?

The first thing you should do is to slipstream the XP Pro CD up to SP2.
This is quick and easy to do. Download the full SP2 installer, about 260
meg, from Microsoft, and then google "autostreamer" and download that.
Follow the directions and you will soon have a bootable XP Pro SP2 install
CD.

Then you can run the upgrade install, and it *should* safely maintain your
files and settings. However, things have been known to go wrong, so it's
not a bad idea to back up first.
