My daughter was given a pretty good computer because someone tried to install
a corrupt, or illeagle version of XP Pro. Now I need to know if I can
install Windows ME on that machine without having to format the hard drive.
I no longer use ME and can leagely give her the software. Save her a few
bucks, and get her up and running. Please respond here and to my email
address? Thanks, Don

If the bad install of XP resulted in the hard drive being formatted as NTFS
you must re-format for ME as it will only install on a FAT system;
specifically FAT32.

And if the bad XP was installed on FAT32 you will still have to re-format to
install ME - the XP install leaves too much stuff behind that is
incompatible with ME.

Hi Jerry

Don is quite correct but what you have to look at first is whether your
version of ME is a retail or OEM version. If it is retail then you can
"give" your software, including license to your daughter but if it is an OEM
version, that came installed on your original computer then you cannot
legally "give" it to anyone as it lives and dies with the original computer.

Last but not least, why would anyone wnat to install Windows ME? it is the
worst operating system ever devised and makes the original version of Linux
look good!
