I bought a laptop with windows 2000 on it and I do not
connect to a server. 2000 take a long time to load. I am
thinking of installing windows 98 instead. If I do this
will all of my data be lost when I install 98?

To install Win 98 you will have to format the partition Win 2k is installed
on.
If your files are on this partition, yes.
If they are on another partition you *may* be able to access them if they
are not on a NTFS partition.
Win 98 can not read a local NTFS drive.

If the partition your files are on is separate from the partition Win 2k is
on and that partition is FAT, you will be OK.
