Have had major problems with 98. Have disc ready to
install 2000. Do I have to reformat my computer before
installing 2000?

All you have to do is to change the boot sequence to CD
Rom first, then floppy and the last should be your hard
drive. If its not on this order change it.

Insert the Windows 2000 CD on the CD Rom and reboot your
machine that should start the installation process. Select
NTFS format when it goes to that screen.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

In the case of an upgrade CD;
During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

I am far from knowledgable regarding this because I have
my own current problem but I learn from my mistakes and
yes you have to reformat. 2000 file format is NTFS and 98
is FAT. From what I know they don't mix. Don't forget to
make a backup of your current files and a 2000 boot disc.
Make sure your disk is totally valid and your product key
will work. Mine won't and so far I don't know why. So my
computer is sitting with the CD in it and won't move.
Good luck

While you *could* upgrade directly from Windows 98 to 2000, I wouldn't
recommend you do that, especially since your Windows 98 installation is
problematic.

Follow Dave Patrick's advice and start from scratch with an NTFS partition.
Of course, you will need to back up your data before doing this. You can
repartition the disk during setup -- you don't need to mess around with DOS
boot disks and format commands any more.
