Hi,

Ok just from the top of my head...install 2000 by booting from the 2000 CD.
Since you already cannot boot to the XP install so it wont make a
difference. After 2000 is installed, and since 2000 can read NTFS, recover
all your data and then you can safely clean install Windows XP by booting
from the disk. There are many different ways of doing this , but this is
just one of them.

As per your link:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_2k.htm

this states that some files need to be moved prior to the install. In my
case i cannot boot xp on the laptop, and was considering installing 2000 on
the second partition to get it to boot so i can reomve the data prior to a
clean install.

Anando,

Couldn't the OP do a parallel install using his XP cd and recover his
data? I'm aware the OP would have to activate twice, once for the
parellel install and once for the clean install once the OP has
recovered his/her precious data files. The parallel install can be on
another partition if so desired.
