Bought a HP laptop/notebook for a recent trip to my son's wedding in
California. Wanted to use it with the Delorme L-20 GPS "gizmo".
Unfortunately all the addresses I had in California were for San
Bernandio, CA and NOT San Bernardino, CA and the Delorme setup was
useless for my purposes. Delorme was nice enough to let me return the
GPS unit ($99.00) and the CD and later pointed out that the same
addresses I was looking for were listed under San Bernardino, CA. So
much for that.
My question is straight forward and I apologize for the above. The HP
laptop came with Windows XP Home installed and I have a copy of
Windows XP Pro that I'd prefer on there. Is there some way I can
install XP Pro without removing XP Home and all the programs? If so
I'd sure appreciate an answer.

As long as you have a "Retail Version" of Windows XP Professional,
and its license is not installed on a different computer, simply insert
the Windows XP Pro CD in the CD Drive and select "Upgrade" and
not "New Installation".

If your XP Professional copy is a retail one (either Full or
Upgrade), yes. Just do an upgrade. In fact it's the easiest and
most-likely successful of all possible upgrades.

However there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly.
However unlikely, it's always possible that something might go
wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup
of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

Be aware, though, that if yours is an OEM version of XP
Professional, you can't do this. OEM versions can't do upgrades.

Sorry to butt in but I am interested in this issue also.

If Bobby has a version of Home that has SP 2 installed will there be an
issue with the upgrade? I have a XP Pro that I won at the MICROSOFT BIG DAY
event in Indianapolis and it will not let me upgrade over HOME SP2. (I
assume it is a retail version being directly from MICROSOFT) I get the
message "ERROR" software installed is newer that version you are trying to
install and install quits.

I'll watch for answers.

Thanks.

You need an SP2 level installation CD. Yours is obviously not at that
level.

Make your own Windows XP SP2 level CD through instructions found at
http://unattended.msfn.org or below:

Most Post-SP2 hotfixes also can be integrated into the CD.

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP
http://snipurl.com/8bqy

You can download all updates and burn them to CD..

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

How to use the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166
(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
patches..)

Creating an Integrated Installation

Integrate software updates into your Windows installation source files

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

This is an open forum. You're not butting in, and you're welcome
to participate.

an issue with the upgrade?

Not if the Professional CD has SP2 on it. If it doesn't, see
below.

I have a XP Pro that I won at the
MICROSOFT BIG DAY event in Indianapolis and it will not let me
upgrade over HOME SP2. (I assume it is a retail version being
directly from MICROSOFT) I get the message "ERROR" software
installed is newer that version you are trying to install and

You have two choices:
1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.

2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including
SP2, and use it. See http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7262

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

For details go to

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Unless you actually need one or more of Professional's extra
features, you're probably better off staying with XP Home and
selling your copy of Professional.

Shenan,
Thank you for the slipstream information.

Ken,
Yes I need the upgrade information as I am having an XP Home networking
problem> "See networking group [Subject: 1 PC on network lost Mapped Drives]"
< and am still waiting for a suggestion on it. You have hinted at the
possible problem Pro has more networking than Home.

Any help is appreciated. I also have another issue> Subject: Program icons
and buttons lost text< in this group that has me puzzled.

Thanks again.

I haven't seen the message you're referring to, but unless you're trying to
connect to a domain, XP Professional won't help you. With peer-to-peer
networks (which is what most of us ouside of large corporations and
universities have), XP Home and Professional are the same.

Ken, I'll re-post it here.

HELP PLEASE!

I HAVE A NETWORK THAT HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR OVER A YEAR BUT WITHIN THE LAST 3
WEEKS 1 TERMINAL THAT HAS LOST ALL ITS MAPPED INFORMATION.

BELOW IS THE DIAGRAM OF THE NETWORK AND ITS SHARES AND MAPPINGS.

PC3 IS WIN 2000 PRO SP4
PC 4, 5 AND 6 ARE XP HOME SP2

DATABASE IS ON PC3

PC 1, 2, 4 AND 5 HAVE MAPPED DRIVES TO PC3s DATABASE.

PC3 HAS MAPPED DRIVES TO PC 1, 2 AND 5

PC5 HAS SHARED PRINTER WITH PC3 AND PC6

PC4 HAS SHARED PRINTER WITH PC6 - DOES NOT SEE ANY OTHERS

PC 4, 5 AND 6 ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET VIA 5 PORT CABLE MODEM.

Within the last 3 weeks I have started having network connection problems at
my customers’ site. PC4 has lost its mapped connections and will not allow
them to be reestablished.

PC3 lists:
From network connections: POS group PC1 PC2 PC3 PC4 PC5 ALL CONNECTED
PcAnywhere lists HOSTS: PC1 PC2 PC4 and PC5

PC 5 Lost all connections to drives and
printers on PC 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 but it is still connected to PC6 printer.

PC 6 does not have PcAnywhere installed on it yet.

I can connect via the internet and PcAnywhere to PC 4 or 5 and then I can
start a local PcAnywhere session to connect to and control PC 3

PC 3s mapped drives to PC 1, 2 and 5 are connected and functioning. When I
browse connections I can browse into PC 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. I can pass data
and manipulate files fine. Browsing does not show PC6.

PC 5s mapped drives and shared printer on PC 3 stopped working but the
shared connection to PC 6s printer still works.

I have:
Reseated the NIC cards in PC 3 and PC 5.
Rebooted units.
Ran Repair connection on XP unit.
Checked protocols. TCP/IP and NETBIOS

If this is a XP Home problem why did the setup work for over a year? Did a
recent update from Microsoft kill my network? I have auto update activated.
If it is a HOME problem did not SP 2 fix HOME networking problems?
If I need to upgrade to XP Pro how do I do this, because I have a laptop
that had Home with SP 2 on it and I have a Pro CD. When I went to upgrade,
the installer said that I could not upgrade, due to the version installed on
the unit being newer that the version I was trying to install. I had to
backup my data and wipe the unit, then re-install XP and all my apps.

Any help will be appreciated.

Sorry, I can't hep with your problem. Networking is not one of my strong
points. But I *can* tell you that upgrading to XP Professional won't help.

I saw something today about having to use
Control Panel > Add/Remove to delete
Windows XP Home's SP2 before one
could install XP Pro over XP Home.
I think it was listed in some MS XP Pro
Upgrade documentation.

It could be that the installer is considering
your XP Home SP2 software to be a
later version than your XP Pro version,
depending on its SP release. Doesn't
make sense but...

No, this is *not* correct. Only if the installed Home has SP2 and the
Professional CD doesn't, is this an issue, and even then, uninstalling SP2
is only one solution (and not the best one). The best solution is creating a
slipstreamed Professional CD including SP2.

Okay, I stand corrected. This was published in
some Net publication but I couldn't begin to
find it now. Since it was incorrect, it doesn't
matter anyhow. Thanks for clearing up the
issue.
