Installing win xp on a usb hdd

Hi,

When I reach the point I am asked to select where to
install the system and I select the usb drive,I am
informed that the system can not access the usb drive.

I know that I can access the usb hdd when I use win xp
that is installed on regulsr hdd.

what do I do?

That depends on how you partitioned your harddrive. The
OS (Operating System) must always be on "C" drive and the
USB drive can be from "D" on, etc. Read below:

If you are attempting to install XP onto a USB drive and try to boot from it
it will not work. The drivers for the USB ports are not part of the bios
and need to be loaded by the operating system (OS). If the OS is not loaded
you don't have access to the USB port that has the OS drive on it. Get the
idea.

The same will hold true for a IEEE 1394 (firewire) drive.

The only reason that a CD-ROM is bootable is that the manufacturers of the
bios have included code that looks to a particular spot on the physical
drive for the boot information. This works the same way for the hard disk
drive.
