Installing Win 2000 pro on a new harddisk

Hi my friend hdd with his win 2000 pro needs to be replaced. I have
bought a new harddisk for him.

Can I install Win 2000 in the new hdd using my computer (Athlon
600, Via chipset), then transplant the said hdd to his (different
type of cpu. motherboard, hardware different).

Will the Win 2000 pro boot up, re-detect new hardware? Or just
hangs up with no display?

I asked because I don't want to sit in his house installing W2K and
waiting.

The only answer is Maybe. This is certainly not recommended. Your better off
doing it right the first time or you'll be at his house longer fixing
problems......

you should use ghost only take you a few min.
 
Someone told me that Ghost Enterprise Edition would restore a good
disk image to different hardware, although you would have to load
certain drivers for cd, etc. I never tried it.

Is that not true?

The potential problem comes from critical decisions made during the OS
installation where power management, disk controllers, etc. are
determined. If you put a OS installation into another system with
different chipsets and so forth, no boot or boot and flakyiness, data
corruption, odd problems... Imaging applications can't change the OS
already installed to function on hardware present during OS
installation but not present now. The range of issues with installing
modern Windows on one hardware plarform then moving it to another is
from no issues at all to not even bootable. YMMV.
