Installing Vista

I have read a lot of posts about vista stalling or hanging for periods of
time.
I have done close to 25 clean installs and upgrades from xp and beta 2 to
rci.
Give it time,
It takes a long time. Be patent especially with the black screen.

Doing an upgrade is an unknown quanity.
10 minutes is not long enough. It can take up to 4 hours to do an upgrade.
RC1 will do a clean install in 25 minutes

That's what I figured! And FTR, mine was a clean install. I was able to do a
clean install of XP Pro in 15 minutes with the same system. 10 minutes of no
display, and no HDD activity seems a bit much IMO.

Same Problem here:
clean install on ABit iL-90MV (with GMA 950 graphics), Core2Duo T7200, 400GB
Samsung SATA 1GB RAM, DVD-RW but NO Floppy Drive.
Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit Versions have the same symptoms as JSMain
already mentioned:
The system reboots twice successfully and the third time I get the progress
bar on an otherwise black screen, then the monitor is switched into standby
and nothing is going on any more.
Could it be that it is waiting for the Floppy Drive ???

Windows XP-Pro and XP-Pro-x64 did install and run without any problems.

The "Upgrade Advisor" says anything is fine, the machine is capable of
running Vista!

Tried again last eve, but no success. went into BIOS, and changed the
settings to AC97 audio instead of using the default HD Audio, Even tried to
disable audio all together. Dissabled everything to a bare minimum, no
ethernet, no extra IO controllers, etc, but the outcome was always the same.
I only recall a single reboot however during the process. I'll need to log my
steps. Don't recall seeing the progress bar prior to the display ging into
standby...

Additional experience from my side:

tried again with a USB Floppy drive connected (Bios reports it as such)
switched on the machine
Blank screen with progress bar
screen goes to standby
disc activity led blinks in regular intervals
left it alone for about 1 hour
came back and machine was completely shut down !!
switched it on again and had a progress bar very similar to what you get
when you restart from hibernation in XP
screen goes standby again, nothing happens.

annoying, isn't it ??
