Hi,

Can anyone tell me what will happen if I try to install Vista on top a
previous installation of Windows 7 beta? Will old files replace new or
whatever?

Thanks.

One cannot "install Vista on top a previous installation of Windows 7 beta".
You'll have to perform a "clean install" which requires reformatting your hard
drive. See this video for instructions:

What about a 'custom install'? Suppose I start the Vista setup program from
within Win 7 beta. 'Custom install' tries to preserve as much as it can.
Anything it can't preserve it puts into a folder 'windows.old'. I don't
think clean install would work if I started vista setup from with Win 7. I
doubt Win 7 beta would be happy to format itself.

You cannot install an older operating system (Vista) over a newer operating
system (Win7). You must do a clean install. End of story. That's one of the
reasons to only install beta operating systems (Win7) on testbed machines
or computers which you are willing to wipe and clean install an OS. Sorry.
