Installing Vista from within Win XP

Sorry for all the questions, hopefully I'll get this sorted out soon!

If I boot into my existing Windows XP installation and then launch the Vista
installation procedure from within Windows (rather than booting from the
DVD), then I select to perform a clean install (not an upgrade) on a
different drive to the one containing my XP installation, will this keep my
existing Win XP installation intact?

Thanks,

Yes it will. The drive you want to install it on must be formatted before
you start. Also, when you boot into Vista, the system drive will be D (or
what ever you used from XP), not C.
When you are done you will have a dual boot with a menu allowing you to
choose which OS you want to boot.
Just make sure you choose the correct drive.

Hope this helps.

You will need to make sure you have a separate partition (20GB or more) for
Vista to install on. You need to select the Custom install rather than the
upgrade. Your Windows XP partition will be C: and your Vista partition will
be D: or E: depending upon which drive letter your CD/DVD writer takes up.
However, when you boot into Vista you will find that Vista become C: and XP
D: or E:
If you visit my website http:vistasupport.mvps.org and then click the Vista
FAQ button, take a look at questions 32 and 53 for illustrated guides to
installing Vista as a clean install and an upgrade. It will give you an idea
of what the screens will look like.

John, are you sure that the drive enumeration will change if Setup is
started from the XP desktop? I think a new enumeration only takes place if
Setup is started by booting with the dvd. Check me on that.

Colin, i hadn't thought of that simply because i've always preferred a clean
install from the DVD. As you say the drive enumeration changes with a clean
install from DVD, so i 'assumed' (rightly or wrongly) that the same would
happen when using the custom install from within XP. Not having installed
this way it was simply an assumtion. When i've finally got my system working
as it should be (i've clean installed both xp and vista) i'll create a new
partition and try installing from within XP to see what happens to the
drives.

Thanks for bringing this one to my attention

No, a Custom install from an XP or Vista desktop preserves the drive
enumeration of the currently running system. However, the Advanced Options
does not seem to be available when running Setup from a desktop, so no
option to format the target. That has to be done before entering Setup.
