So i got myself vista beta 1, so after install im soupposed to upgrade to
beta 2. I am currently using windows xp sp2 home edition. Jz wanna ask, if i
install vista, what happens to all my data? is it like a reformatting of
comp? all my data is lost? anyway to recover them if it did?

1, IF you boot from the vista DVD then it will delete whatevever is on your
drive
2, IF you run the DVD after first booting up to whatever windows you are
using right now then you can do an upgrade to vista.
3, depends on how you do it but yes, you could lose whatever is on your
drive.

Beta 1 is really old and buggy. You ought to be trying RC1 instead.
Anyhow in answer to your question, if you do an upgrade, your programs and
files will remain. However as with all upgrades, its best to make a backup
of your important files in case anything goes wrong.

Run the Vista DVD from the XP desktop, choose upgrade.
It should upgrade okay but there are no guarantees.
Do you have XP disc in case anything goes wrong?
Also to save your videos and music, just burn them to DVD.

Boot to XP and then insert the Vista DVD. After a few seconds a small
install screen will appear. Click the Install Now button. Follow the screens
and then choose Upgrade. I have an illustrated guide to installing Vista on
my website. This, however, only covers a clean install, but it will give you
an idea of what screens should pop up.
http://vistasupport.mvps.org/install_windows_vista.htm

I was going to suggest that you could also install Vista onto another
partition and then have a dual boot sysetm where you could access, via a
menu, either XP or Vista, but i see from a prevous post that you are having
problems with partitions so until you have sorted that problem out it is not
wise to try installing on a separate partition.

If you want to re-install XP then you will need the XP CD or recovery disks
(if you pc manufacturer supplied these instead of a retail copy of XP) For
re-installing XP you will be doing a clean install (assuming you have a
retail copy of XP instead of recovery disks). details of a clean install of
XP can be found on my other website at :

In your tutorial, does it mean that I lose all my data when i install vista?
btw im abit confused with one of the steps in ur tutorial.

13/ You are now asked to choose the type of installation you require. If you
are doing a clean install, select Custom. If you are upgrading from another
version of Windows, click Upgrade. You should note that, if it is not
possible for you to upgrade i.e., you are doing a clean install, the upgrade
option will be disabled

Wat r u implying when u said, ''if it is not possible for you to upgrade
i.e., you are doing a clean install''. when we cannot upgrade?

Did you just simply burn the file to DVD? You cannot do that, it will not
work.
You need to choose burn image/iso from the burning software menu.
Yes if anything goes wrong, you can restore with XP cd.

Don't worry about it. They are just instructions if the upgrade is not an
available option.
Choose upgrade and all should be well. You might like to turn off your
antivirus before you start. And also run the upgrade advisor (may also be
called check for compatibility). This will tell you if your PC is good
enough for Vista and whether any software you have installed might be a
problem. Do this before upgrading, you will find it on the DVD aswell, it
will have a box for checking compatibility.

Upgrading from XP to Vista shouldn't cause you to loose your data. However,
there is always a first time, so my advise is backup any dat you need to
keep 'prior' to upgrading to vista.

As for your confusion. As you can see from the screenshot on my website you
have two install options: Upgrade and Custom. If you also look at the
screenshot, towards the bottom, you will notice (you may have to enlarge the
picture) some text which say's Upgrade has been disabled. The upgrade has
been disabled because i inserted the DVD into the DVD drive and booted the
PC, so that it boots from the DVD. I didn't boot to XP first. In your case
you are booting to XP first so the Upgrade has been disabled option will not
appear.

My apologies if the text caused you some confusion.
