Installing update messed up computer

I downloaded an update and the computer wouldn't boot up without
re-installing the OS. IT SAID putting the OS on my computer would put my
info on my computer somewhere. Where can I find it? Can I go back and
change the date and restore it that way?
 
And, what update did you download and from where? How did you learn about
the update?

I don't recall - I was updating the computer because I wanted to get the
compatability patch for Office 2007 but I never got beyond the update.
The install of the new OS means I don't have my desktop icons, etc. That is
the informtation I need - that and the programs that are on my computer like
Office 2003. I can find some documents using Search but they come up as
Wordpad and not Word.

Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating
software for use with the website…
 
You would be better off staying with your other thread, assuming you are the
Kay with the gateway, who has lost all your docs
