Installing Standalone copy of XP Home Upgrade

Recently upgraded my OEM version of Win XP with Win XP Upgrade. Did this
because I do not want the 90-minute installation of unwanted brand-name PC
software, just the Win XP component ( there is no option to install only XP).
The "Repair" function of the upgrade worked fine, and I registered this new
copy of XP.

My question is this: If, for some reason, the HD needs to be formatted at a
future date, does the OEM version of XP need to be installed first so that
the Upgrade finds a compatible version to Upgrade/Repair? Hoping the answer
is "no", but wanted to find out if it will be necessary to once again endure
the 90-minute torture of installing PC-brand software just to get to XP.

If you happen to have a CD on hand that contains another version of Windows
(older than WinXP) and that version is not an OEM hybrid (void of standard
setup files) you could use it as qualifying media for the step in XP setup
that asks to see proof of the previous operating system. If no such CD is
on hand, you'll need to repeat the install of OEM WinXP before "upgrading"
with the retail version.
