Installing software...

When I try to install updates, they keep stopping short...the install window just disappears. I restart it and it does it over and over again. The only way I can get it to work is to save the file, restart in safe mode and then install it. Managed to get all updates installed, but now I'm trying to activate the copy of Norton Internet Security I got, and it won't let me...keeps doing the whole disappearing act. No error messages, just nothing. What could cause this, how can I fix it

Sounds like a virus to me.
They tend to make installing updates difficult since the updates are
designed as virus antibiotics.
They also tend to disable the ability to install AV software for just as
obvious reasons.
But you may be able to install some other software to get you to the bottom
of the situation.

Try clearing out your Temp files. You might also try running Stinger to see
if it finds and cleans any of the more common virues that can cause the type
of behaviour you are seeing. It is a freebie
