In previous Windows Operating System, I closed programs
by using control alt delete and ending task to close open
programs. I do not know how to do this in Windows XP.
When installing new programs, message always appears to
close open programs before installing. How do I do this?

ctrl-alt-del brings up a menu in XP. (I can't remember older Windows,
but my recollection it's the same). When you see the menu, pick the
Task Manger.

Or to get Task Manager quicker, press ctrl-shift-ESC.

All that being said better to close Applicatoins using the methodology
those programs provider, which is conventionally Menu: File/Exit, or the
little x in upper right corner. Killing app's in Task Manager is rather
brutal and may result in loss of data if the app is does not close
properly (depends on how they programmed it).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

You can do exactly the same in Windows XP. But why not just close
each program normally?
