I was looking at the Office 2007 Install Wizard and noticed that the option
to install Snapshop viewer isn't present. Am I missing something? It is an
option under the 2003 Wizard.

They took it out. :-{(

It is still better than PDF for Access reports, it's just not
a PDF. Which would you rather have?

I think that basically, all the people who worked on OLE
and COM at MS have retired to live on their stock options.
(a Snapshot is an OLE compound document like a Word
Doc).

It just sucks, because I think I finally figured out why the Snapshot Viewer
ActiveX worked fine at work but crapped out on my personal PC. Fortunately,
I had disabled the section of the app that used it due to the conflict.

But can't it still be downloaded separately? This page:

.... says,

Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access

The Snapshot Viewer enables you to view a report snapshot without having the
standard or run-time versions of Microsoft Access 97 through Access 2007.

<QUOTE>

And I seem to recall reading that you can create report snapshots with
Access 2007, though I haven't had occasion to do so.

Only if you say please.

The Business Systems Analyst in me compels me to lean away from it if MS is
taking out the capability to Output to Snapshot in Office 2010, which it
looks like they have.

So lets's see...

DAO going away in lieu of ADO [check]
ADP's taking over the preferred means of connecting to SQLServer [check]
Snapshot viewer as an all-pupose means of sending Access reports to
non-Access users [check]

According to a post by MVP Sascha Trowitzsch in this thread:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/addbuz/thread/ade12ed9-5586-4240-b931-4e076837f53e

.... they are still supported. He said, "Just to mention that snapshots are
still supported although MS earlier announced it would be removed in Access
2010. That means that Docmd.OutputTo "Snapshot Format (*.snp)" will still
create snapshot files".

I haven't installed Access 2010 yet, so I don't know if Sascha is mistaken,
but I would expect him to be reliable. That would be good news.

Didn't.

Didn't.

I guess the jury's out on this one.

I smiled.
