Installing Service Pac 1 and 2

I tried to install SP 1 and received error message 1328
that a prior patch was inatalled, which I know nothing
about that is preventing the update installation from
proceeding. Does anyone know what the fix is for this?
Since I can't install SP 1 I can't install SP 2 either.
