installing SATA hdd as secondary drive

i have a current IDE drive in use with my OS on it and what not

can i stick a blank SATA drive on one of my spare SATA controllers and use
it like an extra without any configuration like i would normally with an IDE
drive?

or is that not do-able?

Sure, but you have to partition and format the disk of course.
At least my board is that way.
 
I am not sure I understand your question.
This is where I am lost "without any configuration like I would normally
with an IDE drive?" You could through an IDE hard drive in a computer as a
second drive and partition and format it and have however much space
available to you.
If you use a SATA drive you will have to install your SATA drivers first to
get the computer to see the drive and then have to partition and format the
drive. It is certainly no easier and maybe slightly more difficult to use
SATA but either is pretty easy.

There is no master-slave configuration required for a SATA drive
connected to a SATA port. Only one SATA drive can be connected to a
SATA port so all SATA drives are masters.

You never bothered to actually mention your OS so no one can be specific
on how to get SATA devices supported within it. You'll likely have to
install drivers.
 
I believe Windows XP with SP-1 supports SATA as I don't recall loading any
drivers when I installed my first SATA drive with WIN-XP on an IDE drive.
If your MB/SATAcontroller supports RAID you will need to load drivers for that.
