Please explain better what you are trying to do. Help us to visualize your
situation by giving an illustrative example of the file you wish to import
into the registry and why.

Registry files have the format *.reg. You would normally double-click them
to merge them into the registry.

Hallo Malke,
I got a key(msrt.key) by email, copied it into a computer file and tried
export it into registry by double- clicking. I got the following message:
"The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary
registry files from within the registry
editor".
Is there no other way? In XP there wasn't any problem.
Thanks for your answer.

But what is this key supposed to do? You might try renaming it to msrt.reg
to see what happens. Registry keys normally can be opened in Notepad and
read. Maybe you should do this and manually add the information to your
registry.

Other than that, because I don't really know why you are trying to do this
(and you left that piece of information out), I don't have any other ideas.

Hallo Malke,
thanks for your answer. I bought a program that was installed on a 2nd
computer with XP. Now I have Vista. To activate the demo version I have to
instal the license
key again. They sent me the key- msrt.reg- It cannot be installed in Vista.
I have opened it in word, I can copy, but I cannot paste it in registry,
because I don't find the file in the explorer. Do you know a solution?

sol,

You cannot paste anything into the Registry the way you are trying to do, a
reg file has to be merged. It sounds like the XP reg file it quite different
than the Vista Registry structure thus it will not install. Copy/Paste the
contents in your reply and we can see if it's possible to fix it. However DO
NOT post the real "license key" part. Just change that to all 0's Zeros.

Vista's registry is vastly different than XP's. The
registry editor in XP is 5.0 where Vistas is 6.0. There are
protected ole/mime keys that Vista will not allow merger of
and the Legacy values to services cannot be altered except
by the SYSTEM account.

I do think you should post the contents of the key as SG asked. You don't
want to open the .reg file in Word. Right-click on it and open it in
Notepad. Again, don't post the actual program license key!

You may also be running into a permissions issue. I know I've merged a
registry key on Vista but I don't remember if I right-clicked on the .reg
file and chose "run as Administrator" or not. And the Vista machine isn't
on right now.

If you don't want to go further with this with us, you can always contact
the program's tech support people again and tell them you're having
difficulties. This must be something they would know how to deal with.

Hallo Malke,
thanks for your answers. I will contact the sender's support service, but
I thought, there could be an easy solution

Malke,

I hope you'll pardon my lack of proper "thread etiquitte" but your dilogue
with Solymar comes close to a problem I'm having with MS Vista.

I've been told that in order to get a device to be recognized, I need to
change the name of the device "Webcam 14823" to "Meade LP1" in the registry.
I don't know how to do that. Do you have any advice?

It isn't a "Miss Manners" sort of thing; it's just that sticking this new
post into an old, expired post isn't guaranteed to get you attention. In
this case it did, so go figure! ;-)

I'm going to assume that the source of information was the tech support for
this particular webcam and that said information is correct. OTOH if you
vaguely "read it somewhere", I'd take the time to call up the webcam's tech
support to be sure.

That said, just Start Orb>Search box>type: regedit
Click on the program when it appears in the Results box above. I'm honestly
not sure if you need to run regedit as Administrator to do this, but if you
do, then instead of left-clicking on the program, right-click and choose
"run as Administrator" instead. With regedit open, highlight My Computer
(top level you will see) and go to Edit>Find. Use Webcam 14823 as your
search term and check the box to look for the whole string (phrase). You'll
see where you can do a Find & Replace, or you can do it manually if you
want to be sure. After the first result is found, hitting F3 will make it
search again.

Is that what you want to know or have I missed your point? As always, if I
have do post back and explain.

Your point about the webcam tech advice is well taken. I did read advice
from other users of the software and imager how to solve the problem. They
unfortunately were not strong on particuars other than change the name in the
registry. I fould the device in the registry. I'm not going to mess with
this. I plan to get step by step advice from the manufacturer ( there are
some things better left to the professionals). Thanks much for the sagely
advice.

I'm glad to have been able to help you. It may be that your webcam isn't
compatible with Vista, but the best source of information about that will
be the product's tech support people.

Good luck,

Malke
