I just installed two 256mb RAM sticks, but I do not know where to go to get the computer to recognize the new memory. The instructions that came with the product were of no help in the matter.
It should be detected automatically during the POST during
the boot process. If it isn't, the BIOS may be set to some
maximum RAM. Are you sure the RAM is of the correct type
for the mobo?

just install them and go for it, there is no installing any drivers or
anything, they either work or they don't, right click My Computer left click
Properties and see if it says 512 mb ram.
if your computer will not boot up then it is not recognizing them.
