Installing RAM

I have an IBM thinkpad laptop running XP pro, 1.5gz, 248(?)mb RAM. I have my
eyes set on a peice of hardware 512mb RAM. How do i know if it's compatible?
 
You can help us all by giving the model number etc of the IBM.

In general IBM Thinkpads have one additional expansion slot for RAM, usually
accessed by unscrewing and then opening up a small cover plate underneath the
machine [turn it over, disconnect from the power supply and remove the
battery before you attempt to inspect or install additional RAM].

The slot may already be used by one module, which can be replaced with one
of larger capacity.

Generally IBM [and others] now use industry standard SO DIMM modules, so
there is a high probability that your local PC store has product that works.

Go down and plug in a module, see if it works. The Thinkpad will beep or
just not power up if the module is incompatible. Otherwise, look in your
user guide for Memory module description and take it with you when you go to
buy.
 
Ok. How do i find the cerial number (I now i sound stupid...)? and does ddr
and sdRam differ in any way i should know?
