This is a case of a problem that cannot find a solution because no one wants to help

I have a Dell computer with Windows XP Pro. Upon installing Roxio’s Easy Creator 7, my user account became corrupted. This is indicated by lost settings and icons reverting back to defaults. I have contacted Dell, Microsoft, and Roxio, and this is how it ended

Dell will not help because it involves a third party software package
Microsoft will not help because this copy of Windows XP was factory-installed by Dell
Roxio says they “never heard of this problem†and are not even willing to listen

I am a former programmer, and my experience with many software packages says that this is most likely a Windows XP user account bug, because the same problem has occurred with other software installations

What can I do

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, just trying to help.

Sorry I was of no assistance, I thought after creating a new profile you could
copy what you needed over, guess I was wrong. Good luck in solving your problem.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have seen this article before.
Unfortunately, it is not a good solution because creating a new profile means
reinstalling programs, and if that is the case, I may as well reinstall the OS
from scratch - not my first choice.
Also, as soon as I try to install the software in question to the new profile, that one would get corrupted.
The best solutions would be for MS to protect the profile better so
installation programs cannot mess it. Next best would be for the software maker
to test these conditions when installing software.

Roxio products do not appear to be overly compatible with XP.. the problem
is not with XP.. Use Nero instead..

Thank you for your reply.
Normally, I would agree with you, and drop this product, but, unfortunately, there have been other programs that have caused this problem upon installation. I was hoping to get a more generic solution, but I am afraid one is not forthcoming.
Thanks.
