Installing Printer Driver

I have a Dell Dimension 8250 computer and a Lexmark X85
printer that I have had for about a year. Every once in
awhile I get a message saying "Unable to connect to the
printer" but have always been able to get connected by
doing what I'm told (disconnecting and re-connecting the
USB cable, disconnecting and re-connecting the power
cable or restarting the computer). This time those
things didn't work so I uninstalled the printer and tried
to re-install it. I then get a message saying "There are
no valid INF files for this operating system. Unable to
continue installation". I have contacted both Dell and
Lexmark and they give all kinds of instructions to
correct this but none of them work. I just called
Microsoft and they told me that I could pay $35.00 to get
the problem checked out or I could try posting my
troubles here and see if someone can help me.

I have downloaded new drivers from Lexmark and they
didn't work any better. As far as first ensuring that
I've removed all traces of the previous installation, I
thought I did that last night per the instructions given
by a Lexmark technician. After telling her what my
troubles were she said that was the problem and she e-
mailed me the instructions of how to do the uninstalling.
The website that Bruce Sanderson's article was on opened
for me right away but I went to my wife's computer to
view it so that I could print it and it would not open
there. I came back to this computer and it won't open
here now either.
Here's hoping you can give me some more pointers as I'm
about to the end of my rope on this.
Greg
