My motherboard recently failed. I replaced it. The version of XP that I was
using came preloaded with the computer I purchased. Microsoft no longer
recognizes that copy of Wndows as authentic. How do I get around this, or do
I have to purchase another copy?

Contact the manufacturer of the computer. Since this is an OEM version
of Windows, he is responsible for supporting it and should know what
to do here.

Most OEM preinstall Windows CDs are BIOS locked to specific PC
models/BIOSes. Hence why they usually come pre-activated as they're
basically just an Image of the hard disk that's been fully setup and shunk
onto a CD/DVD. Unfortunately, you won't be able to get it on a different PC
without some hacking of the old BIOS to see what it checks.

Anyway, you might be able to use the key but I think MS are in the right and
can force you to buy another copy

You can install the new board and then install the hard drive. It will say
you have to activate it again and you do. I replaced my hard drive to a new
System that I built where the drive was the only thing not new and I am
still using it now six months later.

Worked for me.
