Hi,

I am the administrator of my computer which runs on
win2K. I have other people who can log into the machine
as users of a particular network domain setup on the
machine. I was wondering if it was possible for me to
schedule the automatic updates for the machine such that
the updates are downloaded, prompts for installation and
also installs when the non-administrator is logged in.

In other words, would the updates be possible only if the
user has administrative powers or is there another
possibility? I know that it is possible to distribute the
updates from the central server. But, can we do it at a
more local level?

Thank you.

I have the same problem and made a similar post here a
week or so back - no reply yet. Spoke to MS UK, a
friendly guy who did not know the answer but offered to
connect me to someone else who would formally confirm
that in more detail if I pay £160 plus. (I have OEM and
the supplier of the PC doesn't know either). I reformatted
and reloaded straight from the box. I can't make it work
so I guess the Power User will have to surf without
AutoUpdates notification, or make the User an Admin. (MS
advise not to surf as Admin per their PR but what to do?)
Does anyone actually know the answer to this I wonder.
I did hear that a script can be written but that is beyond
me.
Good Luck.

If you are the administrator of the pc, why not just do your administrative
duties and download the updates while you are logged in? Why depend on
non-admins to do the updates? What if there is an error druing the process?
Do you think the non-admins will be able to handle the situation?

Otherwise, SUS is the best solution for you - users do not need to be admins
for the updates to be applied.

Good morning serverguy,

Under SUS I have found that the user does require local
admin rights, and this seems to be confirmed by various
other posts in this forum. Unless of course I have missed
something. I would appreciate you putting me right if I
have.

Wrong! SUS works at the computer account level, not user level. Yes, it
acts differently based on whether a user is a local admin or not, but it
works either way. A user doesn't even need to be logged in for SUS to work,
so if you are having problems with SUS when non-admins are logged in, there
is something wrong with your configuration.
