installing outlook 97 with verizon email

I am setting up a computer that was passed down to me, and
I have Outlook 97 receiving email from my Verizon acount
just fine but I can't send it -- I get the infamous 'no
transport provider' message. Any idea what I need to
configure to get this to work right for outgoing messages
