I just installed Office 2003 and downloaded all the
patches on MS web site. Word and Excel work OK, but Power
Point won't run, not even in safe mode. Anyone seen this
and found a way to fix it? Thanks...

TAJ - you're a genius. Starting Windows in Safe Mode
allowed me to start Power Point and close it normally.
Then starting Windows normally, Power Point still works.
You've made my day! Thanks,
Sue

Sue,

Thanks for reporting back...I'll get the faqmeister to add it to the faq.

Hi TAJ,
I was too optomistic when I saw power point run. Now what
I'm seeing is if I start Windows in Safe Mode, Power
Point will work - then I go back to regular windows and
Power Point will open 1 or 2 times, then go back to
failing. Any ideas for this???
Thanks,
Sue

Do you get any error messages, Sue?

Or can you tell us more about what "failing" entails? Will it just not
start, or does it start and crash when you try to open a presentation,
or something else?

I'm guessing its bad video card drivers.

Sue.... I suggest you try and locate the most up to date "graphics card
driver" for your computer and version of windows

e.g. nvidia and windows XP
ati and windows 2000
etc

Yeah, I was kinda thinking that, too. (heh, I *always* think video
drivers, even when it's not!) But it's kinda odd that it will work for
awhile, and then stop working.

Definitely worth a shot, though.

Failing means when I try to start PowerPoint, it never
starts, and gives me a dialog with the following generic
type message:
"MS Power Point has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then it says
it created an error report that I can send to Microsoft,
blah, blah, blah. I'll try finding a newer video driver,
but it seems like it would never work if this was the
problem. But any and all suggestions are greatly
appreciated.

Hey - you guys were on the right track with the video
driver. I downloaded an updated driver, which didn't make
a difference. Then my brother, who's a programmer at HP,
suggested changing the video resolution from 32-bit to 16-
bit and it's now starting Power Point every time. So
thanks to all for your help!!

Hey, that's great news! Thanks for letting us know. It woulda been
awhile (if ever) before we (or at least I) would have thought to change
the display resolution.
