I've installed a new/used motherboard on my system.
Windows will no longer boot up. (Probably because the old
drivers are still installed.) Is it possible to get
windows to install the new hardware during boot up? You
know, the way it does on a fresh installation?

Hi, Wade.

After you swapped motherboards, WinXP woke up in a whole new world! "This
isn't Kansas anymore!" There's no shortcut that I know of to get it
re-oriented: You've got to let WinXP Setup run again to detect the new
hardware configuration and customize YOUR copy of WinXP to fit THAT
environment. Just about like on a fresh installation, as you said.

You can preserve your installed applications and data while reinstalling
Windows itself by doing an "in-place upgrade" as described here:

After you do this, get your firewall and antivirus back in place, then visit
Windows Update to get the latest SP and all later fixes. Better plan on
half a day for this whole project.

I was just looking into that option. Didn't realize the
software would stay installed. Cool.
Thanks,
