Installing new memoy / problem

I have a Dell E310 running XP Media Edition. It came with 512M RAM and
I've been trying for months now to upgrade. Dell tells me that I need
DDR2 5300. I ordered three times from Crucial and each time as soon as
I try to get into Windows I get the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). The
most recent BSOD at the very bottom says: ialmdnt5.dll-address
BF022387 base at BF0200000, Date Stamp 42dd45cb. There's lots more; I
have a picture to send of the screen if anyone thinks they have an
idea on what may be wrong. Any and all suggestions would be
appreciated. The PC is 2-1/2 years old and is getting very slow.

Before I came here I was all over the internet after typing in the
dll. I came to a site that offered to fix all the registry/dll errors
with a product called RegistryBooster 2; worth the money to clean up
the 630 errors the scan found?

I found this on one of the web pages of a RAM mfg:

Your Dell Dimension E310 only supports modules made with a specific type of
chip. Should you find what seems to be the exact same memory elsewhere for a
lower price, it is very possible that the cheaper memory will not work in
your computer.





My guess is that the Crucial memory may just plain not be compatable with
the machine...

and though the RAM may be more expensive if you buy it from Dell... If it
works, then it's worth it.
 
Dell probably has its own proprietary memory module and you have to buy from
them, not someone else; else they could not charge you a lot more than
Crucial, Kingston, tec.

Going by this (the original posting) and some of the responses - comments
below...

Dell is not using any proprietary memory modules. You can purchase memory
for your given specs:

(Maximum Memory: 2048MB; Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200 with a
maximum of 1GB per slot.*)

I have no idea where you got your memory needs from (DDR2 5300?!) but
crucial's website clearly states for the model you have what I have linked
you to and explained here.

I'd personally recommend the 2GB kit for the system (since that maxes it
out):

You will have to remove all your current memory to use the 2GB kit - but -
that's your best bet anyway.

From the FAQs for your memory selection:

Q: What memory goes into my computer, and will a faster speed be
backward-compatible?
A: DDRII memory with support for DDR2 PC2-4200 speeds.
Because DDR2 memory is backward-compatible, you can safely upgrade your
system with any of the guaranteed-compatible DDR2 speeds listed below.

Strangely - it only lists the PC2-4200 memory. ;-)

No software is going to fix your problem. Do not buy software to try and
fix a hardware compatibility/speed issue. ;-)

You might want to run a utility such as Everest Home Edition and determine
exactly what speed the original memory is that Dell installed. I'm guessing that
it will show you have the Dell RAM is PC4200.

Look under the Motherboard branch for the SPD entry.

According to Crucial, they offer PC4200 (533 MHz) RAM for your system.

To all; the memory that Crucial recommends with their scan is 5200.
When I go to the Dell site for my PC they recommend 5300. I've tried
both 5200 and 5300 from Crucial. I guess I will send the Crucial
memory back to them and purchase the Dell memory and see if that works
(theirs is pretty pricy which is why I went with Crucial to begin
with). I will run the utility; I do know the chips in there now (the
originals) are 4200 which is why I was somewhat surprised that Dell
was now recommending 5300. Thanks to all the responders; Steve
