I am presently installing a second HD (Maxtor 120gb). I had planned to
format it using Windows disk management. The instructions shows preference
to use the MaxBlast4 software for formatting. I just don't like to install
software like this unless it is really worth it. Am I missing anything not
wanting to install the MaxBlast software in my primary hard drive?

Running WinXP pro, P4 Dell system.

MaxBlast doesn't install anything on your hard drive, unless you need
some sort of overlay that would allow your (older) system see the full
capacity of the drive. From your cited specs, I doubt that will be the
case.

Maxtor recommends MaxBlast because they are soley responsible for its
operation, and can, in theory, rely upon it. It's pretty much the same
thing as Epson recommending that you only use Epson paper and ink with
their printers, excepting the profit motive.

Feel free to use Windows Disk Management, but tuck your copy of Max
Blast away for some future where you might want its low-level utilities.

Thanks, Grinder, that is exactly what I needed to know. Appreciate the
helpful reply.
