Installing New Hard Drive

I am looking to upgrade my existing computer by adding a
hard drive. Ideally, I would like to completely replace
the old one as opposed to having my new drive act as a
slave. I have heard in the past that this may be a
problem as I will have to reinstall XP and Microsoft may
think it's an unauthorized sharing of the software.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

If you completely replace your old hard drive, keep in mind that you'll need the full OS version, not an upgrade, to install. If your current copy of XP is a full OS, when installed on a new hard drive, during activiation you will receive a warning that your product key has already been activated and will give a phone number to Microsoft for you to call, if the message you receive is in fact an error (It will also do this if you have a full version of an old OS and then upgrade it to XP on the new drive). I've never had to call it before, so to be honest I'm not completely sure if they'll allow re-activation on the new HD. I don't see why they wouldn't, but you might want to contact MS just to be sure before you act. If they'll allow it, it's no extra cash out of your pocket. If they don't and you've already junked your old HD, it'll be $200 for the full version of XP Pro. And as for personal opinion, there's nothing wrong with slaving a drive. I have a 250 GB drive slaved to a 60 GB drive, and the main reason is because instead of paying extra money for the current full OS, I'd rather sit and wait-out MS's release of Longhorn, then junk my 60 GB drive

If its an oem copy you cannot reactivate, unless hardware from oem. If a
retail version no problem other than a phone call.
But why junk the old hd, install new as slave

Sometimes, as in the case of an IBM PC, there is no room for a second
hard drive.

To whom are you replying? And you're wrong, incidentally - my uncle has an
IBM PC with two hard drives.

Please keep all replies with the original thread - otherwise everyone is
going to end up confused!
