but i've forgotten how to do it.

Hello

Install the drive make sure that you ahve the jumpers set correctly
and in oyur bios make the cdrom the primary BootDevice, and reboot
your pc and follow what it says to do.

This is for is your installing it as secondary, just in case see link
If you need further info on installing and formatting a secondary HD
here's a link to a Seagate webpage detailing how to add a 2drive to XP
It should be relevant to all drives. Best to choose NTFS Format ok

Hi, Peter.

Just make sure all the jumpers and cables are correct. Then plug it in,
boot into WinXP and use Disk Management to initialize it (if it doesn't
happen automatically), create partitions and logical drives, assign drive
letters and format them.

If you get lost, try the extensive Help file in Disk Management. Shortcut
to Disk Management: at the Run prompt, type: diskmgmt.msc

I'm assuming you are adding a new drive as secondary. If you are upgrading
to a new boot device, the steps are more complicated. Post back if you need
help with that.

I bought a new hard drive. I want to format and install windows xp.
Once I put in the hard drive which end of the cable do I attach to the
drive, the one at the end or the one after that? Their numbered 1 & 2.
After I do that do I put the cd that came with the computer into the cd
drive and start up the machine and hold a certain key down? If I have
to go into the BIO to select drive how and when do I do that? I had the
instructions on how to do this but can't find them.

See the drive manufacturers web site and download another copy of the
installation instructions.
