bought the above from local computer fair - great. However, plugged in via
usb but computer doesnt recognise. No disks or anything else supplied.
Please could someone give me step by step instructions how to install so I
can back up my files. Thanks.

You might look at the "name" on the drive, and do a search on
www.google.com for the manufacturers site and then look up the drive
model there for the user guide. (and possible drivers)

You haven't given us enough information to get a specific answer. What
is the make/model fo the external hard drive? Does it have its own
power source (plug into the wall)? Does it work on another computer?

If it is a known brand, check on the mftr.'s website for tech support.
Otherwise post back with more details.

also went to Maxtor site - says go control panel/admin tools/comp.
management/storage/disk management etc. but the disk isnt there!!

Mary

Install it temporarily as a slave to an existing drive in your system.. then
go to the location that Maxtor provided and partition and format the drive..
Windows should now see it as available.. remove and replace into the
external USB case..

I took it back to the computer fair today but alas the seller wasnt there.
Who do I get to do it and at what cost!! That was the whole point in buying
from a computer fair!! Is there any other easy way I could get my computer
to recognise it - someone suggested a boot disk? I am a pleb in case you
didnt realise!

I'm sorry to say but your experience is exactly the reason why buying
computer stuff at a computer fair is a Bad Idea unless you have a lot
of computer skills. I can't tell you the number of clients I have had
who did this and then found out the hard way that the "good deal"
wasn't good at all.

Take your computer and the external hard drive to a local professional
(not BigStore) and have them look at it. I am not saying this to hurt
your feelings, just being practical. This is not something that you can
solve in a newsgroup. Someone knowledgeable has to actually look at the
equipment.

Its a Maxstor 160gb fitted into external case driven by usb - is this enought
info?

I recently purchased a Maxtor OneTouch II 200Gb external drive. It
came with two CDs. One was the installation CD, which when inserted
into the Cd reader, loaded the drivers and the backup software.

The other CD is the documentation; however, it won't open!!

Anway, the installation process was quite simple and the backup
software seems easy to use. Quite happy with the package overall.

Are you missing the Installation software? Probably available at the
Maxtor website.
