Hello all, I am trying to set up a group policy in AD to
auto install an MSI file application to either users or
computers. When i assign the application in a group
policy and then log on to a machine to test it, the
application does show up in the program list as rarely
used, but it does not install for some reason. Am I even
on the right track here? Auto install is checked off in
the GP and it does show up in the add/remove program list
in control panel, but it isn't installed. Any help would
be appreciated. Thanks!!

Mark,

Here is a Step by Step KB on how to do it.

- 302430 HOW TO: Assign Software to a Specific Group By Using a Group
Policy

- - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=302430

If it's MSI install for User, the user account must have permission to
install program.

- 259459 HOWTO: Allow Users Who Are Not Administrators to Install MSI
Packages

- - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=259459

If you had set the GP correctly & MSI still does not install, you can enable
MSI installer logging and check for error:

- 223300 How to Enable Windows Installer Logging

- - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=223300

Hope the information helped.

Ming,

Thanks for the great info. I followed the first article
word for work on my setup and I am getting the same
thing. If I go look in add/remove programs in the control
panel of the machine that was the target in the group
policy, it shows the installation package as being there
installed...it also shows up under the add programs
window as a program that is available for installation on
the network, but it still does not install really on the
machine. It says installed, but it doesn't. I don't know
what to think at this point.

Mark,

Enable MSI logging and check for the error.

Also, had you test it with other known good MSI package? Just to make sure
it's not a MSI packaging issue?

Here is some good info on troubleshooting MSI.
