Charles

I would like to know how to install linux on my pc. i
currently have window xp pro on my 120 harddrive and i do
have a 9gb hardrive connected also. both hardrives are
cable selected. how can i install linux on the 9gb
harddrive or do i need to have both operating systems on
the 120 hardrive.please give any suggestion.......thanks

Most all the Linux distributions I'm familiar with provide detailed
instructions for how to install, including setting it up as a multi-boot
computer. Look on the CD that includes your Linus distribution you picked.

Also, much information available at the Linux Documentation Project
http://www.tldp.org/, esp. the "how to" documents.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Assuming that 9GB drive is empty, just pop in the Linux install disk and
boot. When installing, be sure not to let it handle partitioning itself, but
rather manuallu do that with DiskDruid. And remember to put / and swap
partitions (at least as much as memory) on the smaller drive.
It should install grub or lilo on 1st disk's MBR, which is what you want to
choose what OS to run when booting.

If and when you want to get rid of Linux (or make it primary OS, that is
install and XP it aagain),to disable the (=delete) Grub/Lilo, boot from XP
CD, choose Repair at fist possible occasion. The command is FIXMBR

I disagree with this advice considering the OP is obviously new to Linux
installations. Disk Druid will only confuse them and if they are
installing Red Hat or Mandrake (I have not installed other distros
except Suse and the versions of that I've tried do not do automatic
partitioning) the automatic partitioning is perfectly fine and optimized
for the disk size and amount of RAM.

I would think that running colinux would be the easiest.
