I've installed and unistalled my new-out-of-the-box Lexmark X1190
all-in-one printer twice now, and in both instances it worked
perfectly. The problem is that Windows XP Home SP2 keeps on finding
new hardware and opening its installation assistant, which declares
that an error occured during installation and specified file could not
be found.

If I press finish (which is the only pressable button), it just starts
again, popping the New Hardware found message...

Any Ideas? Has anyone encountered this?

When you installed the printer did you do so with the data cable connected to
the printer. If so then uninstall, disconnect the cable, reboot and install
with the cable disconnected and connect the cable when the installer asks you
to or is looking for the printer.

Thank you, Tony

Interestingly, the documentation distinctly indicates that the switched
on printer should be connected by USB cable to start the installation.
Then all Windows' attempts to install must be cancelled and the driver
CD inserted to start the Install software.

As a general rule installing any printer with the cable disconnected is a good
idea, there may be exceptions and if there are it would most assuredly be a
Lexmark!! However I am not aware of an exception.
Good luck.

It seem to be a Plug & Pray problem, MS seems to do everything
it can to force you to install its drivers and not the later or correct
mfrs ones.

I've got two printers shown for one printer, for one its the MS
drivers, for the other the drivers are the install CD ones.

Never have managed to get rid of the limited functionality
MS ones.
