I have a Dell 8400

The SATA hd that came with the Dell has gotten corrupted and a
"Repair Windows XP installation" isn't working.

I would like to recover some data from this hd if at all possible.

I have a 60gb Maxter D540x-4K HD that I would like to install as the
Master and then read the SATA HD. After successfully installing and
booting to the IDE HD, I installed the SATA but when I turn the
computer on it won't boot up. Just shows a black screen.

Please help

Looks like a mostly dead disk (not completely, since then
the boot-up would succeed and just not find the disk).
Not anything you can repair yourself, at least not with
resaonable chances of success.

I have had systems with single SATA drive. It helps to have another working
computer with an SATA connector so important stuff can be saved. But that
does not address your question.

By "Repair Windows XP" i assume you booted the XP OS disk and selected
install instead of "Recover", then did the repair install? It is explained
here pretty well

This would re-install XP without deleting any user files. It is not clear
from your post how much of this you did, if any.

it would appear you put in an IDE and installed windows xp and verified it
booted? If so, then you need to get into the cmos and disable the boot from
SATA (possibly named SCSI) else your system will attempt to reboot the SATA
when you connect it back up. You might also try connecting the bad SATA on
the 2nd connector of the SATA it your 8400 keeps trying to boot the SATA. I
have 8300 with both ide and sata and can boot from from either depending on
the setting in the cmos.

The system is configured to boot SATA before PATA.
You should download the SATA drive's diagnostics (floppy/CD) too.
