Motherboard type??

K6 is a processor........How much memory is installed? While a 450mhz
processor may be okay to run XP for minimal usage, memory is a key
also....Ya could be wasting your time if you plan on more intensive
applications.

Many thanks. Its my home Pc used primarily for MS EXCELL and internet. It
has a Ram of 163MB. The point is that the BIOS is not recognising the 40 GB
Hdd. Originally the system had 6.5 GB Hdd, and worked fine formore than 6
yrs, till the hdd Failed.

Many thanks. Till i download Everest, i may inform that its my home Pc On
ASUS P5A-B mother boared abd Awair 4.51 Vr. Bois, it has a Ram of 163MB.

a primary partion of 6.5 GB, but the system has faied to recognise the same.

Double-check your figures again also. I doubt any drive had reached 6.5 GB
in those days.

I would suggest you go to this link & download the manual..Check the
"actual" version of the BIOS & what the latest supports & changes
made......The site is very slow at the moment and on my high speed
connection it will take 1/2hr just for the manual............If it turns
out the board does not support it than you need a controller
card....These days newer boards are cheap in the 1-7ghz processor range,
if cost is your factor that would be a good way to go.....But DUDE that
board is ancient, not even worth running it with XP or the latest
softwares...........

I grabbed the manual finally & makes no mention of largest disk
supported...........

I did find this though..........

Please try update the motherboard BIOS to v1011 beta 005 for supporting
HD larger than 32GB. You may download it from the following URL:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/sock7/ali/p5a-b/1011b005.zip -> P5A-B
(Baby AT, Audio) BIOS 1011 beta 5
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/sock7/ali/p5a-b/1011bn005.zip -> P5A-B
(Baby AT, without Audio) BIOS 1011 beta 5 However, please note that this
motherboard won't support HD larger than 127GB.

So it appears a BIOS flash may be in order........Everything is
available in the link I gave you earlier.

Good Luck.......

Thanx everybody for the kind assistsnce. I upgraded the bios AND itworked.
BUT now it seems that it has some interrupt problems and dosent respond to
system reboots and probably something more, as while installing Windows the
system hags at reboot point

Check to make sure your IDE cable is seated properly along with the
power adapter.......Curious if you are using an IDE ATA/UDMA 40 pin
though?

Thanx. I flashed the Bios with the older version and then reflashed it with
the update, and it is working fine.
