Hi

I have just bought a PNY 6600 256mb graphics card and have attempted to install it , following the guide on the my super computer website. Everything goes fine until i install the drivers and am prompted to restart the computer. I restart, the xp logo comes up and starts loading but then the screen comes up with a blue box saying power saving mode and goes blank and you cant do anything. I have since installed the old graphics card and reset it to a few days ago.

The graphcis card should be compatible. It has the right agp power supply etc.

Does anyone know why this is doing this ?

Cheers

try this

# right clcik the desktop and go properties
# Select the Screen Saver tab.
# Click the Power button.
# Select the Power Schemes tab.
# Turn the power saving feature off.
# Click OK and exit

then try again

Disable all energy saving options in control panel and Bios.

You do have the extra power plug connected to the card, don't you?

You probably have or I don't think the machine would boot, but maybe worth asking.

If you're not even reaching the desktop, as your post suggests, to carry out Me__2001's advice you may have to start in safe mode.

Come to think of it, you'll probably have to start in safe mode to access control panel, as I've suggested above ;)

thanks , i have disabled the power saving mode's.

I was wondering whether i was uninstalling the old drivers correctly. Would this make a difference ? i uninstall the drivers through add and remove programes but dont do anything else. Is this the right way to do it ?

cheers

Yep, that usually does the trick. After removing, when you reboot close the prompt that XP displays for driver installation wizard, then browse to where you d/l new drivers and just click on the executable file and proceed with installation.

With XP there really isn't a need to uninstall old drivers, XP will just roll the old ones back, but they're only taking up space so you may as well uninstall.

Was your previous card an Nvidia model?

And you had any luck yet?

yeah my previous one was an nvidia. i will try again in about half an hour or so

Cheers !

After doing a combination of the above, the card is now installed and playing BF2 !! hurrah

only on its lowest settings though and i have had to do quite a few restarts due to the computer jamming up. But im sure its just teething problems. Anyone got anytips on how to tweak it so things will run smoother ?

Make sure you have Directx 9 installed on your pc it should come on the disc that came with your Graphics card...

with BF2, its very bugby right now so get the latest patch for it and you wont have any problems!
