installing games

I have been running Alpha Centauri and Civilisation 2
successfully under XP but they stopped working
recently.When I tried to re-install I get the following
message.
C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications.
Can anybody help?

Have you tried making sure the file exists?

Had this happen to a few people I know lately, and it had vanished so I had
to send them mind to get stuff working again.
