Installing FP 2000 corrupts Outlook link on XP Start Menu

I am trying to install a trusty copy of FrontPage 2000 on a new PC running
Outlook but two problems occur:

(1) I receive an error message during the installation process saying,
"Unable to access configuration for Microsoft Personal Web Server"

(2) The Outlook icon on the XP Start Menu stops linking to the Outlook
program and links instead to Internet Properties. The icon also changes from
the Outlook logo to a simple email logo. There is a messy workaround
(un-select the email option on Start Menu custom properties and paste/pin a
shortcut to Outlook on the Start Menu) but obviously it does not solve the
underlying problem.

I have tried installing FP 2000 using both the Typical install option and
the Custom install option. In the latter, the Server Extensions Resource kit
and Admin Forms are crossed out as 'Not Available' with no option to run from
CD or computer. Is this significant?

Any ideas, or do I need to go and buy a later version of FP?

Many thanks
Nigel

It will work on XP but you can't run (and shouldn't try to install) PWS. XP
*Home doesn't support a server. If you do a custom install of FP2000 without
PWS, you can still use it but would have to use disc-based-webs as you'd not
have a server to run against.

FP2000 doesn't come with a web server (PWS), nor is one required locally. Only FP08 requires a web
server to work as designed.

Hi Rob and Thomas.

Thanks guys. I have tried to do a custom install without PWS, but I still
get the error message and the subsequent corruption to the XP Start Menu
Outlook link. It sounds like I need to go out and buy FP2003. Now that's a
point, can I install the upgrade version of FP2003 without having FP2000
installed on my new PC? arrgghhh...

Regards
Nigel

Yes you can upgrade without installing FP2000, just insert the FP2000 CD
when prompted...and of course never lose the CD!

I have also installed a copy of Office 2000 on a newer laptop PC so I can use
Front Page to update my established Website. Now I am unable to update my
Website at all on my current computer. When I try to "save" my current work
I keep getting the error message: "Unable to access configuration for
Microsoft Personal Web Server." Then FP just disappears. I must admit that
I didn't understand the advice that was provided for Nigel. Can someone help
a total novice to understand how to correct this problem. HELP. Maggie
