Installing Fonts

I have been sent some font files which I want to install on my PC. I went to
the Fonts folder in Control Panel, then File Menu and Install Fonts. I
browsed to the correct location but in the Font List window it showed no
fonts found.

The font files are there but I notice they are size 0Kb.

Does anyone know what is going on here. Do I not have the right type of
font file or am I doing something wrong?

I am using Windows XP. The font files were originally on a CD.

I am aware this is probably more of a Windows question than it is specific
to Word but I couldn’t find a Windows discussion group.

Not a Word issue per se, as fonts are installed in Windows, not Word, but
I'm cross-posting this to microsoft.public.word.printingfonts in hopes that
someone there might have some ideas.

By "the correct location" do you mean the CD?
The font files are there but I notice they are size 0Kb.

This typically happens when fonts have been incorrectly copied from a
Mac or a Mac CD. Older Mac fonts have their data in the resource fork
rather than the data fork (don't ask!), and most compression,
extraction and copy programs copy only the data fork, which for mac
fonts is empty (zero length). They have to be told specifically to
copy the data fork.

If those ARE older Mac fonts, they can't be used on a pc without
conversion anyway.

If they're NOT Mac fonts then something else went wrong in the copying
process to end up with zero-length (i.e., empty) files.

Re browsing to the "correct location"

I tries 2 processes - one, browsing direct to the CD where the files were
and two, copying them in the normal way to folder on hard drive and then
browsing to that location.

If they are older Mac fonts and they do get copied correctly, how do I
convert them

On the question of font conversion from Mac to PC:

Try a Google or similar search for CrossFont or TransType.

If they're from a newer mac, if they're Truetype fonts they might be
usable directly; if they're Opentype fonts they WILL be usable.

If they're Type 1 fonts, they must be converted.

If they're truetype, there's a simple free conversion program,
TTConvert or TTConverter available that runs on the mac. I don't know
of an equivalent on the pc side.

There's also a very old free dos command line program, Refont, that
does a barely adequate job and it's non-free windows (3.1!)
equivalent, WRefont.

Current conversion programs that run on the PC include Crossfont (from
ASY) and TransType (from Fontlab).

Any given font is subject to licensing restrictions that may or may
not allow the transfer of fonts or their conversion.
