Installing Firefox 0.9 -- total disaster -- back to 0.8

I downloaded Firefox 0.9 this morning and was really looking forward to
installing it. But when I did, I got a couple of rude shocks. The
first was the much reduced choice of themes. The second was the much
reduced choice of extensions -- one of my favorites, Image Zoom, wasn't
there at all.

But where things really got messed up was when I tried to install some
of the extensions that it did have. The dialog box said that to finish
the installation, I would have to exit and restart the browser. But
when I did that, a message came up saying it was installing extensions
and ground along for ever -- 10-15 minutes, at least -- without anything
happening.

So I closed the message box, opened the browser in safe mode, deleted
all of the extensions, and decided to try reinstalling them one at a
time. I installed one, and closed and reopened the browser without
getting the hanging message box. I installed a second. But when I
tried to install a third, it hung again.

So I went in via safe mode and tried to uninstall the last one I'd
installed. The dialog said the uninstallation would be completed when I
restarted the browser. So I did just that -- yep, same hanging message box.

So I uninstalled 0.9, even delected the directory, and then reinstalled
it. But when I tried to open it -- same hanging message box. And when
I used safe mode to check -- the extensions were all still there.

At that point, I figured life was too short to keep messing around this
way, so I deleted 0.9 again and went back to 0.8.

My son says he knows people who've installed 0.9 without problems, so it
may be just my system. (Win98SE, nothing very unusual.) But I wanted
to both give people here a warning and also find out if anyone has any
clues about what is going on

This will become better within some days/weeks, depending on how much time
the extension/theme developers have (e.g. some of them are students and at
least here in Belgium that means they are in the middle of exams now).

Sounds like a problem with an old installation or an old profile.
Did you read & follow the installation notes on the Mozilla site?

I am using firefox (no install version) from a removable media and
it looks almost impossible to get the profile information back from
v0.8 on to v0.9. As other posters have indicated, I probably will
stick to v0.8.

You got that far. The installer BSOD'd me.

For me, it asked me if I wanted to import my settings from .8 install and
I said SURE. It imported the IE settings instead. Not sure how something
tested so much can cause so many problems on install. Once installed, it
works ok. I think the slowness was a PC issue. It runs a little better
today.

Install on my home PC (the test machine -- sandbox) failed to import
settings as well.

Guess I will stick to Mozilla for a while :)

You got that far. The installer BSOD'd me.

Use the zip build then, it should serve your needs:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/0.7/thunderbird
-0.7-win32.zip

(on one line, of course)

Sorry!

Got carried away with the new Thunderbird release :-)

The Firefox 0.9 zip build is over here:

Have fun,

Themes and extensions have to be developed for each new level.

Fine here. 98SE. Deleted extensions. Deleted .8. Installed fine.
Imported previous info fine.

Maybe I'll try it one more time, but will delete all the extensions
before I delete 0.8. (Was that step in the online installation
instructions? If it was, I missed it.)

I'll report back on how it goes.

tried downloading some extensions.

I had no problems with "Single Window." Then I tried the extension to
reopen a closed tab -- and as many times as I closed and restarted
Firefox, it never did finish installing. And then I tried the RSS
Reader Panel -- and it hung up when I tried to reopen Firefox the way it
did before.

So I'm stuck again, because I can't either install or uninstall the RSS
Panel without the program hanging. Back to 0.8 one more time, I suppose.

It worked for me too.

No it wasn't. When migrating, the installer will automatically disable
all extensions anyway.
I'll report back on how it goes.
