When installing second DNS server on my LAN I get the Error
"One or more services for the Domain Name System (DNS)
component took more than their allotted time to start.
Installaion will continue, but services will not be
available until they have started completely."

Any clue?

Naturally my DNS on that server does not work. I've got
one working on the existing LAN now.

Server just pulled out of the box.

Thanks
John

If you haven't already done so, uninstall DNS and reinstall it. If that doesn't do it, check the event logs for any informative info. Let us know if there are any
errors in the event logs.

I've done this 3 times. Event Log reflects nothing
applicable to DNS or the error of loading DNS.

Thanks
John

Just to verify you are not using Internet connection Sharing on the machine?

When you uninstalled it and before you reinstalled it, did you delete the
system32\dns folder, the HKLM\System\CurrentCOntrolSet\Services\DNS key?

Depending on what service pack you currently have installed, when you
reinstalled DNS, did you use a Service Pack integrated i386 source or the
retail source off your CD? If off the CD, did you reinstall the Service
Pack?

In addition to my other response, also want to make sure that the Primary
DNS suffix of the machine matches at least the SOA of the records. That can
cause issues too.

"HKLM\System\CurrentCOntrolSet\Services\DNS key?"

Nothing. Valued was indeed removed.
