OK, here go I hope I don't leave anything out.
OS: MS XP SP3, Dell XPS Laptop & Outlook 6 (6.00.2900.5512)

1) I am deployed overseas and am forced to use local national internet
connections so this is what I want to do. I want to install a digital
certificate so I can send and receive encrypted e-mail. Not all e-mail needs
this security so I have decided to use Outlook Express for encrypted e-mail
and Outlook 2007 for normal e-mail.
2) I obtained a certificate from Comodo (MS sugested) using a HOTMAIL
address and I installed it according to instructions. (under Accounts,
Secuity, -signing certificate & encripting certificate) I left Alogrithm at
3DES. I have also double clicked on the certificate , outside of Outlook,
and installed it that way and again it states "The import was successfull.....

3) I went into Options, Security Secure Mail and ticked both Encrpt
contents & ticked Digitally sign all. Clicked apply then ok.

Here I thought all should be done. So I go to send a message and I get the
following "Outlook Express was unable to locate the digital IDs of the
following recipients" Meaning the e-mail address I was sending to. I am
given the option to "Don't Encrypt or Cancel"

I went back and checked "Tools, Options, Security, Digital IDs" NO Digital
IDs are shown. OK I import the ID again and get "The import was successful"
Go back and NO Certificate IDs are there.

What am I doing worng???? I don't usually ask for help but I have beaten
this dead horse to death and can't figure it out.... The error I am getting
is saying it can't find the digital ID of the person I am sending the e-mail
to.

Next I say OK I won't encrypt it I will just send the ID to the receipent
(my other e-mail account) and I get the error "The message could not be sent.
{next line} An err has occurred." If you need the digital ID before you can
send a signed/encrypted e-mail how are you supposed to send the ID.. HELP

Thank you all in advance for your help from an old IT guy...

This is not the newsgroup where you should be posting this concerning Outlook
Express.

As a courtesy since you are overseas I will crosspost this to the OE 6 newsgroup
where it belongs for you

~wave @Peter~

Outlook and Outlook Express are not the same thing so be careful with your
shorthand references, please. There is no "Outlook 6;" v6.00.2900.5512
points to OE6 running in WinXP SP2 and higher.

I have a hunch that you may to want to access your Hotmail account in OE via
POP3 (instead of WebDAV/HTML) for this to work as expected. See
http://windowslivehelp.com/solution...ail-account-to-microsoft-outlook-express.aspx

Did you read?...

<QP>
To send encrypted messages, your Address Book must contain digital IDs for
the recipients.
</QP>
Source: OE Help: Sending secure messages

Now, please see OE Help: Obtain a digital ID and add it to your e-mail
account.

I'd also highly recommend reading all of the Related Topics linked in each
of the above Help sections (e.g., Advanced security information; Send a
digitally signed or encrypted message; Automatically digitally sign or
encrypt messages).

=============

=> Mike, when you reply to my post, please eliminate the crosspost to OL
Installation newsgroup.

i didn't mean to piss anybody off and I didn't mean to do what ever a cross
post is. I went o MS and found Outlook groop and put in my question. I am
not an Outlook expert and if you read my post you will se I am talking about
OE not Outlook. I have set up my Outlook "EXPRESS" and it does use pop and
that works well, if you read my post, you will see that.

AGAIN, I am sorry if I did anything wrong and posted to the wrong group. A
simple "This is the wrong group, you should post your question here."
would have done instead of the sarcasim. I did everything I could to post
a question with all the pertenant information. I must say I could answer 8
out of 10 questions on this board but I get negitive, derogitory comments.

I guess now I remember why I quit the IT business, you guys need to lighten
up and try to help instead of trying to knock somebody down....

AGAIN, I AM SORRY IF I POSTED TO THE WORNG GROUP. I DO APPRECIATE THE
RESPONSES THAT I GOT THAT WERE AIMED AT HELPING..

That is why I have crossposted this to the Outlook Express newsgroup for you. You
already had a response from PA Bear MS MVP in the Outlook Express newsgroup.. He did
ask you a question
to which he is awaiting your response.
K9 when you reply to his post remove the reference for this newsgroup as so the
crossposting which I set up will stop. You do this by removing the reference on top
in the address filed where it say's newsgroups:
Please read his reply and question.

Mike, please reply to my post, not yours.

Yes, my account works fine and it is set to POP3, NOT webDAV/HTML. My only
problem is with the certificates and encryption..

I did read all the helps in OE and it appears to be a catch 22. Again, if I
can't send encrypted e-mail to person A without having person A's ID and vise
versa how do we originally get each others ID's?

What I understood from the help and cert. installation instructions was that
if I sent an e-mail to person A and included my ID, not encrypted, that
person A could then add me to thier contact list along with my ID, but that
is not working.....

Thanks
K9
