With WinXP Home how do I install a piece of software to only my logon,
so that it doesn't appear on other family members logons (I have four
different family logons, one for each family member)?

Some software asks the question when installing, but not all. Any help
appreciated.

Those that don't ask will usually default to installing for all users. Two things that can be affected by this. First is what portion of the registry the application stores its settings in, the second being where the icons for the app are placed. You have no way of controlling the first. The second you can manually modify after the install. First make sure you are logged on with the user that you want to use the application. To move the icons from the "All Users" start menu to your start menu, right click on the Start button and select "Open All Users". From there browse into the Programs folder, find the icon(s) for the application. Select the icon(s) and on the menu click Edit, Cut. Now right click on the Start button again, this time selecting Open. Browse into the Programs folder there. On the menu select Edit, Paste. This will move the icon(s) from where all users can see it to where only the currently logged on user can see it

If non authorised users entered the program name in the Run box could it be
opened by them from there ?

The question wasn't about authorization. Yes, anyone could find the
actual executable for the program and run it. You can set permissions on
files in XP if using the NTFS file system and control access that way.

That's the one. Many thanks indeed Tom.
