Installing an older scanner

Hi, readers, and thanks for reading. Sorry to ask what I'm sure will be a
very basic question, but I could really use some expertise.

I've inherited a flatbed scanner, a ReliSys Reli 2412. The machine itself
seems to work just fine -- i.e., it has plugs that fit the wall and the
computer, and if I turn it on, it lights up and its parts move reassuringly.
My problem: How do I get from lit-up scanner to imported image?

XP isn't recognizing it as new hardware. I assume I'll need a driver; the
manufacturer hasn't made one for XP (Home Edition), but I've downloaded a
few possibilities for XP and NT, just in case. Even assuming one of these
works, though, I don't know what to do once the scanner and the computer are
acquainted. What kind of software should I use to import an image? Since
so far I'm just experimenting, is there any no-frills freeware that you can
recommend?

Sorry to be so simple about this, but I'm growing up in an era of
wizards....and this time there's no wizard. Thanks in advance.

Since you didn't say and I don't want to do the research,
unless your time is worth less than $0.50 an hour, and this
OLD scanner has some feature, it will be better and cheaper
to just spend $50-75 and buy a new scanner. You can spend
$75-200 and get very high quality scanners.

Say you connect it, but XP doesn't recognize.

Is it a parallel port scanner?

If you have the driver disk, use the add hardware wizard
and insert the disk when prompted.

No disk, drivers not signed?

Go to the manufacturer's site, look for XP drivers.
If it's OLD, it may not be on XP compatibility list.

I agree, probably better to buy a new scanner.

USB 2 is FAST, and USB 1 is cheap...

If it's a parallel port scanner, then I would scrap it. XP really
hates old parrallel scanners.

Check on the manufacturer's site whether it has a driver for win2k and
try it. You are not risking anything and it may work. If it does not,
the advice to buy one might apply. BTW, I have no problem with my
parallel scanner and XP.
Assuming you get your scanned to work, you need a specialized software
to use it. Paperport from Visioneer is one of them. The thing is, the
cost of this software is almost the price of a standard scanner, which
will include the software. Bottom line : you will probably endup buying
a scanner but first, try some more to get the one you have to work. And
researching the Internet may yield interesting results in terms of
sofware, may be you can find one which is shareware, I have no idea.

Good luck

Thanks, Jim, John, JEM, and NobodyMan! I've toyed with my drivers but had
no luck, so a new scanner might be the way to go. Ah, well. I've been
eyeing a multifunction, anyway....
