I just installed a Microsoft-approved Western Digital Hard
drive on my P4 machine running XP. Windows recognizes the
drive and reports it as being properly installed when I
check system properties. However, I can't access the
drive. In "My Computer" the drive doese not appear in the
list of local drives. I checked the jumper on the drive,
which is properly set to "cable select" and it is
installed in the proper order on the the data ribon. Does
anyone have an idea what may be wrong?

If a Western Digital hard drive is to be the only device on the IDE channel
, the jumper should be removed and the drive placed at the black end of the
IDE cable. If it's to be a slave, jumper it as slave and place it on the
middle connector. You will then need to partition and format the hard drive.
This you can do in Windows.
